Veranika Nikanava

On July 25^th, 2019 disaster struck again when Veranika Nikanava drowned while trying to cross the Teklanika River while returning from Bus 142.

At only 24 years old, Nika Nikanava had visited dozens of countries and managed to live in the USA, Indonesia, Lithuania and Germany. Originally from Belarus, Nika graduated from film school in Berlin and spent the last two years of her life based in New York City, furthering her education and pursuing a career as a documentary filmmaker. Brave and adventurous, she dreamed of becoming a war correspondent, eager to direct her talents and passion for helping others by shining light on human rights issues. Nika’s final film project, “Generation 328”, highlighted her concerns about the justice system in her homeland.

Nika has an older sister, two older twin brothers and four nephews. Her bright spirit continues to live in the uplifting energy and warming love she shared with people around her. She touched many hearts and will forever be remembered by her colleagues, friends and family.

Nika taught me how to approach the world with the curiosity of a child, and to open your heart entirely to life. She offered unconditional love and authenticity to those around her. It is rare to find such rawness and honesty in a human. She brought so much joy into my life and continues to guide me. I miss you everyday, little hurricane.

I was fortunate to share time and dreams with Nika. Though it was cut short, she enjoyed a full life of exploring and living freely. The world is beautiful, and being so open to its light made Nika a small sun all on her own. A burning coal of her love and energy lives in my heart. Thank you, kotik.
